Clutch/Shifting Issue

2004 TJ Jeep Wrangler X, all stock, manual. yesterday while driving the "Clutch went out". The clutch is slighty harder to depress than leading up to this issue. It would not go into any gear. Only way to get it home, and it was a short distance when this happened, was to turn engine off, put in 1st gear, then start it. Once driving I had to stay in 1st gear, the one time I tried to upshift to 2nd, it was a no go, and the engine had to be turned off. Thoughts on where the problem lies, I want a working knowledge before I have it looked at. Thanks
