Clanking sound under Jeep?
I have a '97 Wrangler Sport and I have been hearing a sort of clanking sound underneath. The noise only happens when I'm in gear and making a turn. But it also happens when I'm driving straight but not as much. I've tried to narrow it down by seeing if it happens when I'm turning and not in a gear and it doesn't happen. So I'm not sure whether or not it's my u-joints on my axles or my driveshaft. Has this happen to anyone before or now which one it could be?

I had that exact thing happen, only on turns. It turned out to be the HEAT SHIELD rattling on top of the muffler. I had just bought it and had the dealer just put some clamps on it. Fixed it perfectly and no sound in over a year. Hope this helps

Well I was driving it today and it does it when I'm in a gear or not and while I'm not turning. I was paying more attention to the sound and it sounds like when two gears are spinning and one pops off then clicks back on. I don't know if I explain it well enough but that is what it sounds like to me. It also sounds like the noise is coming from my transmission because the sound is coming from right underneath my center conosole. I'm going to have it checked tomorrow, I hope it's a quick fix. But any help will be appreciated.

I was thinking that maybe since I went mudding and it died on me and I left sitting in a parking lot for about 2 months while I was down in New Orleans helping out, that maybe some mud dried up on the u-joints and I was thinking of sprayin some wd-40 on that maybe that would help.

Pass on the WD40, IMO. Put a lawn sprinkler under while the Jeep is cold & not been ran, let the water work its will & drop the mud off.
Hard to diagnose sounds over the internet, IMO. Could be a wheel hub, could be a diff, could be a u-joint? Get under it & wiggle stuff around, maybe tap around gently with a rubber mallet, see if anything sounds loose that way. Put one axle up on jack stands, wiggle the tires, see if anything is abnormal there? Good luck!
