For those of you that wanted to hear the response:
Jeep got a 'clean bill of health' today -- the smell was, as most of you suggested, the catalytic converter breaking in. Apparently the smell should stop at some point, though it varies cat-to-cat. As for the check engine light, the assembly that holds the gas tank housing to the frame was loose, creating a huge lack of suction and a "large leak" as they said. That was patched up with a few twists of a wrench, and i'm back to where i started, smelling like propane and onions. Thanks everyone for your help, this forum is great.
