Check Engine Light Madness
So, my check engine light illuminated this morning, on my way into work. Before I got out of my Jeep I decided to check for the trouble/error code. I did the little "ON/OFF/ON/OFF/ON" trick, waiting for the odometer to come on each time, before turning it off again. However, neither the Check Engine light nor the Odometer would displayed any trouble/error codes.
Does anyone know what this might mean? I was thinking, maybe it might be indicative of a loose connection somewhere. But what do I know, I am still a newbie when it comes to troubleshooting my Jeep's issues.

Wow.... As of yesterday I got the same exact issue. I did the ignition thing about 15 times and no luck. I did hold down the odometer button while turning the key on, and it did the spedo cluster check thing, but still showing no codes, and I still have a light???? FYI mines a 98 to.

Nope, that trick won't work on a '98...
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/faq-check-engine-light-diagnostic-trouble-codes-error-codes-problem-codes-778086/#post7228382 Most of the national-chain parts stores (Autozone, Advance, O' Reilly's) will scan your Jeep for codes with their OBDII tool, no charge.

Well, that's just frustrating as all hell. I've seen reports of it working on a '97 and '01, but it won't work on the 98?! [Sigh] What, does it only work in on models built in odd number years or something?!

98,99,and some of 2000 won't work!Other than that they all work.Go have an auto parts store retrieve the codes. They will do it for free,or go buy a code reader. They can be found for $25 bucks at Harbor Freight. They come in handy!

Going to an auto parts store sounds like the plan. I'll head up to Autozone this afternoon, maybe I'll even get me one of those $25 code readers. That seems cheap, I would have thought something like that would have been more like $200+.
MANY THANKS!!!! |
