I am on vacation in Colorado and took the Jeep out riding trails twice so far and the check engine light keeps coming on. It happened both times when I was decending some steep trails in 4lo. I could smell something almost like fluid getting really warm and then the check engine light would come on. I drove into autozone to get it diagnosed yesterday, but the code it was giving was for the mass air flow sensor, which the print out said it could be from a cracked vacuum line or something. I am thinking that the smell was coming from either the transmission or the transfer case because it was really the only thing working hard at the time.
Has anyone else ran into this issue before? I don't want to get stranded on some trails out here in CO!
