Check Engine light and fuel

I recently bought a 2000 wrangler with a rebuilt 4.0. When I hit 150,000 miles, the check engine light came on. I asked the previous owner about it and he said that had happened to him a couple of times. All he did to fix it was to put mid-grade fuel in it instead of regular. I did that and the engine light did go off. But I'm curious if this is going to do more harm than good in the long run. Any help would be appreciated.

Turn the key on and off three times and see what code it reads next time the light comes on.The 4.0 is made to run on 87 octane gas.

That won't work for any TJ, you need to leave the key on the third time. For 1998-2000 TJ's the key trick doesn't work, you need a OBD II code reader...

Thanks guys. I'd already figured out the key trick. The light came back on yesterday so I'm going to have the code read today. I appreciate the help.
