In theory. But have you ever heard of someplace just selling a transmission housing? I know I havent.

I doubt the junkyard would want to sell just a piece of the trans.

EDIT: Considering you could find a junkyard with an nsg-370. Take a look at daveys jeep and see what kind of deal he can give you.

No, but a tranny that is shot would go cheap, I would think. As long as the part needed was in good shape......ah screw it, I'll just get a new one.

I would try, nothing wrong with trying, be honest if you dont want to get caught in a lie. Tell them you tightened it to the appropriate torque setting and it cracked. I would leave out the part that you have a screwed up wrech.

Does the bell housing from a 2002 tranny out of a 4.0 l fit the NSG 370? I have a feeling that is a big no, considering the NSG 370 is made by Mercedes.

I think the bellhousing is part of the trans housing.

UPDATE: (if anyone cares, or looking for lite entertaiment)

I called a Jeep dealership, told them that I torqued the drain plug to 22 ft lbs, but the case cracked. Not covered under powertrain warrenty. Okay, didn't really expect that to be approved.

To get the thing fixed will be $2,700 CDN.
That price includes replacing a part of the transmssion housing (they 'Diamler' have the tranny housing as well, which comes in two different parts, forward and rear housing). The cost of the housing section is $800 Cdn. The Clutch assembly is being replaced with new as well as pilot, throwout bearing and a couple other bearings. Removing and reinstalling is also included.

If anybody wants to know how to spend $2,700 changing tranny fluid, all you need is a torque wrench that doesn't work (the ones that click).

The transmission specalist was telling me that this is the third NSG 370 to come with this problem in the past two months. Hey, I'm not alone; there IS an idiot born every minute!!!

Is it honestly leaking so bad that you feel the need to do this? I would certainly try JB weld. Would you post a picture of the crack for us all to see? I'm very interested in the severity of it and the doomsday approach you seem to be taking.

Is there a chance that backing the plug out might let the crack close up slightly? If it's only weeping as opposed to leaking, I don't see a problem with just getting under there and topping it off occasionally.

I'll admit its not a LOT. The hairline crack is about 40mm long. I don't have the Jeep at the moment, its at my mechanic's shop. It loses fluid at an estimated rate of one drop every two or three minutes. I should have taken a picture of the crack, but in all honesty I was too busy bashing my head into the wall. Ya, my Mom told me also, "there would be days like today", but its become the rule. After all that, this probably makes sense right now. I just don't have the time to do this myself.

The throw out bearing has been making some noise, so that added to the crack and the fact that I don't know how the PO treated the clutch, I mean it was a leased vehicle. I doubt they really cared about it. For now it makes sense to get this done and over with. It hurts to spend money like this, but things could have been worse; I could still be commuting on my motorcycle. Not fun in the winter.

There's a complete 6 speed minus shifter in the "for sale" section for $300. It probably won't last long....

THANKS for the heads up! Too bad for me, I already authorized the repairs with the mechanic. I deserve it though; teach me to take much greater care in the future.
