I leave mine on but... be prepared for a mess if you screw up directing the flow of the old fluid out of the transmission into your catch basin/bucket.

I duct taped a piece of cardboard in the shape of a piece of paper folded in half length wise under it. As long as it's stable the gear oil will just roll down the cardboard into the drop pan. Toss the cardboard when you're down, no mess!

Tranny isn't really a problem since the drain plug is on the bottom. For the TC, I made a trough out of a thin piece of aluminum and channeled the oil to the big drain hole in the skid plate, of course with the catch pan under the skid. If you slowly remove the drain plug, you can regulate the flow coming out of the TC and have very little mess. Hope this helps.... oh and I used an empty round gear oil bottle with the tappered lid, slid a piece of clear 3/8" I.D. hose over it to fill things back up.

i take mine off,
while the TC and Tranny are draining i pressure wash the skid, and shoot some fresh paint on it. i also touch up the frame where the skid mounts.... and apply a liberal coating of anti-seize to the skid mounting bolts before reinstalling the skid. |
