Changing Auto trans fluid???

How often does the automatic transmission fluid need to be changed in a 2004 Unlimited?

Does it just need changed or the whole flush??

Can't remember when it needs changing, but after talking to a lot of tranny mechanics, I get the feeling that the whole flushing thing is a waste of money. They have told me that the best thing you can do is to have a tranny shop change the fluid/filter and have them check all the torque and condition of the components inside. When you get it flushed, they don't check anything, so if you have something comming loose in there, it won't get any attention.

I'm not sure but I had Jeep do mine. It wasn't that expensive either.

It's at 30K in the owner manual. I changed mine at 30. Just drained it and put in a new filter and refilled. Took 5quarts to refill.
Probably will do mine every 10 - 20K now.
There are no bands on the 42RLE so no adjustments needed.

I'm going to say somewhere in the 60-70k range.

I have heard that if you've gotten to the 110k range without any problems then you shouldn't get the flush. Sometimes the sediment/crap settles in a good spot where it cant get disturbed. Then if it's flushed the sediment/crap might settle in a valve.

I did a fluid/filter change @ 60k and the fluid wasn't too bad. And that's with the 32" 3.07 combo. So I know my trans is working to get my heep moving when I floor it.

--------------------
Edit:
Manual says 37,500 (for normal operation) & 24k (for agressive stop&go driving).

Drain & Fill, Change Filter, Adjust Bands

30k for the transfercase in both situations.

So I looked in the manual last night and it said that the fluid in it should last the lifetime of the vehicle unless water gets in it.

Did they mean that for a manual?? Does that sound right.

I understand I need to have the filter changed, should the fluid be changed when that happens?
