Changing Auto Trans Fluid

What I want to do is drain 100% or close to it of the fluid & change filter. Not just drop pan change filter & only add 4-5 qaurts mixing the clean fluid with rest of the dirty fluid still in there. Does anybody have any ideas to do this without droping the trans and draining torque converter. I am switching to Amsoil synthic ATF. I want to do this to my truck 2002 chevy 2500 HD also.

Transmission shops can flush it. A mechanic once told me he didn't recommend it though, something about making any problems worse.

Changing Auto Trans

I just had my 2001 flushed & new filter by a trans mech local shop.
The fluid was dark to say the least. I also asked the mech to tighten the shift pattern. I 'm now on my second tank of gas and getting better mpg.
I'll let you know how every thing goes. For $167.00 and an hour and Min's. of my time I think it's well worth it.

AT flush, Radiator flush, plugs replaced

My Wrangler is an '01 and I'm the second owner. It just hit 65k miles and I decided to have the local garage flush the transmission and radiator. I also had them replace my plugs. I'm not sure if all this is needed, especially since it;s costing me around $350, but since I don't have records from the previous owner, I have no idea what was changed and when. I personally have owned the Jeep for 1 year and have only changed the oil every 5k.

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on flushing the auto transmission and radiator at 65k. Am I doing more than needed or is it about time? Thanks guys.

I know with my Rubicin 4 speed auto it is not required that you ever drop the pan just have the flush done at the dealer and thats it. I was a skeptic till I read up on it and sure as heck, no need. I have mine flushed ever 25k

I've heard both the pros and cons about reverse flushing transmissions. The one thing I hear the most is that if you do a reverse flush without changing the filter, you might create more problems. I've never done a reverse flush, so I'm not sure if that's just a rumor or if it's true. On my 2002, my tranny was making this annoying clunk when I put it in drive, and it was also suffering from delayed upshifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. I changed my fluid by dropping the pan and replacing it with a deep pan with a drain plug. I filled it back up with about 4 quarts fo fluid. I then disconnected the return line for the trans cooler, and poured another quart or so into the dipstick tube while the motor was running with the tranny in park. Putting the tranny into neutral starts the front pump. Just make sure that the return line drains into some kind of container. I did it in increments of about a quart or so until the fluid coming out was clear. Total fluid replaced was about 10-12 quarts. I also adjusted both bands while I had the pan off (a dial inch pound torque wrench is a must). I topped everything off with an aux. B&M trans cooler. The trans feels fresher, and the band adjustment got rid of the clunk and delayed upshifts. I got the ATF 4 from the Dealer, and the Deep Pan/Filter and Cooler from Summit Racing.

bringing back an old thread....

what did you end up doing? how did it work out? i'm in the same boat you were and would like some suggestions. I've got 2 gallons of Amsoil ATF sitting at home right next to a deep tranny pan kit from the dealer.

I'm nervous about flushing it with all the stories about debris breaking free and causing problems. I'm wondering how mixing the leftover standard ATF in it that doesn't drain out, with new amsoil synthetic ATF would work out.

The new tranny pan has a plug on it, so next time i could drain it and refill it without having to drop the pan.

Simple and easy. First drain and replace trans filter and fluid. Then locate the return line from the radiator to the transmission. My 01 has rubber hose connected to them at the radiator. Simply disconnect the rubber hose at the radiator and add on another length of hose. Around 4 feet will do. This process will work best if you have a friend or two to help. Take an empty quart bottle and put the length of hose in it. Start the engine and let it fill up the empty container, when it does turn off the engine and replace that quart with a new one through the dip stick pipe. Do this until red fluid starts to come through. I think mine was about 5 quarts. When finished, reconnect the return line to the radiator. Restart engine and check for leaks, after it has warmed up completely recheck the level of the fluid. Took me all of 20 minutes to do mine. Very Easy.

I just had my tranny flushed about 2 months ago. I have a 97SE 5spd with just over 87k on the odo. I will tell you this, I wish I hadn't done it. After the flush, it shifted harder and there was a noticeable difference. I have not had any serious problems or anything like that, but, with that many miles, those parts get broken in and have a very specific "comfort zone". You have much less miles racked up than I but i'm just speaking from experience that you may want to just top off your tranny fluid with some new fluid.

Dodge diesel truck world is where I spent a bunch of time, Just drop a cooling line to a graduated container and run engine with tranny in nuetral until flow stops. Refill with amount removed and call it a day. THIS IS NOT FLUSHING,,,just a fluid change and won't hurt a thing. I got it down to less than an hour with clean-up included.
