Carrying Jerry Cans Without Buying a Bumper/Tire Carrier

I'm in an 04 TJ, and really wanna incorporate extra fuel onto
my rig without buying a rear bumper with mounts, etc. Does
anyone have any creative ideas for this (besides the mount that
attaches to the spare)? Does anyone just throw their cans
into the back, or strap them down inside? Thanks

Can't you sit it on the bumper and bungee/ strap it to the back?

Hmm. Call me old fashioned, but unless I was in a vehicle with a separate trunk I wouldn't haul fuel inside the vehicle. Even then I would only do it in the case of an emergency.

Carrying fuel inside the Jeep is asking for trouble. A jerry can full is gonna weight 50 lbs and you'd really need to tie it down well to keep it from flying around. And having gas in the cab is not good anyway you look at it. I'm not hot on the idea of carrying gas anywhere on the Jeep while driving down the hiway. Cans mounted outside once hit in a collision will blow gas all over the rig once. If you absolutely need gas only fill the can right before you hit the trail.

I came up with a design to hold a 2.5 gal can on the rear bumper. Its nothing super special.

Its made of basic steel stock, one side is a small tub that holds the base of the gas can, its a few inches tall and surrounds the base of the can on all sides, the underside has 2 peices of flat stock that slip snuggly around the rear bumper, one inbetween the body and bumper and one out back. With this the gas can is supported on the rear bumper and snuggly in place, add a simple bungy around the bumper through the gas can hangle to keep it in place when things get rough. Total cost ~$7.

I sent my design to my bro who welded it up in class and then spray painted it black. I haven't tried it out yet, but I am pretty confident it will work great. Only drawback, is the gas can must be removed from the bumper to fully open the rear gate.

I saw here recently someone had a photo of their Jerry Cans on their front fenders.

I don't know if that's any more or less save than having them on the rear but it looked great to me.

They were in front of the doors but behind the front wheel obviously.

Sorry I don't have the pic but it's out there somewhere...

These are another option. Just need a good place to mount them..

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_95238_400009005_400000000_400009000_400-9-5

I hear they are very resisant to leaking. Two can be laid in the back on the floor, with some plywood over the top of them. But still. They are inside your rig.

Sounds cool, but I'm having a hard time visualizing it. Do you have any pics?

I'm headed out on a trip the first weekend in May where the nearest gas station will be ~50 miles away at least. 1 or 2 2.5gal jugs mounted like you've done might save me a 100 mile round trip to refill

I run them but the mounts for the jerry cans are built into my tire carrier and they're protected by the swing out and spare itself, I wouldn't run them inside at all or outside unless protected.

I run the Bestop Half Top virtually all year round... One of these days I'm going to work on a rack system that holds a Jerry can inside each rear roll hoop, over the wheel arch. One on each side should be plenty.

...bring an empty jerry can and a length of hose...then look for a parked H2 somewhere near the trail (see they ARE good for something!)

How about something like this? Mount a can holder to the tailgate and carry the spare strapped down on the inside. It would be better then having fuel on the inside. Strap it nice and tight and it should be ok.

I should have some at home, at least the basic design 'blueprint', I'll see if I can dig them up at post them later.

^That will work if you did it like rocketman with the spare in the bed, but its to heavy to have the spare and tire on the gate.

Hope none of you guys get rear ended, gas tank / can, with no bumper, doesn't sound like a good mix. Plus 99% of the guys carrying cans rarely actually need them, yes there are a few, most don't
