carrier break?

Ok i am changing gears from 3.07 to 3.73 for a d30 and theres supposed to be a carrier break at 3.54 right? Well bought a 3.73 carrier from east coast supplies and theres no difference. The carrier is no taller and 3.07 and 3.73 are same distance apart . Im having a friend look at it whos a corvette speciallist and doesnt think theres any reason to change the carrier cuz the ring depth comfinsates for the pinion thickness. So is the carrier break just a myth and i wasted my money or r we missing something.

I'm honestly not sure what the exact difference is, I never thought about it. But, there is something different. Maybe the diameter of the carrier where the ring goes around it? Maybe the bolt pattern spacing? You didn't waste you money, you did the right thing.

Be very careful with the wife mod. Uninstallation can be extremely expensive. Wife mods have been known to take the Jeep and all other mods during the uninstall process. Also, make sure you service your wife mod properly as often as humanly possible. Wife mods not properly serviced may malfunction or uninstall themselves at any time.

Carrier breaks are not a myth. The lower the ratio of the ring & pinion gears, the smaller the diameter of the pinion gear. I.E. the pinion gear of the lower ratio 4.88 has a smaller diameter than the pinion gear of a higher ratio 3.73 has.

With a smaller diameter pinion gear as you'd get with a lower axle ratio, the ring gear teeth have to be moved closer to the pinion gear so the teeth can mesh. A carrier for a lower ratio axle ratio moves the ring gear closer to the pinion gear so their teeth can mesh properly.

The only way around using a different carrier once you reach that magic "carrier break" ratio is to use a "thick" ring gear which does the same thing... it's a thicker ring gear that positions the teeth close enough to the pinion gear so they mesh properly.

I wish I would have caught you earlier. I still have my OE 3.73 gear sets and carriers.

The two carriers are identical except for the surface where the ring gear mounts. The machined surface is moved over about 3/8". Unless you hold them side by side you won't notice the difference.
