Can't shift into Park or 1st Gear

All of sudden I am unable to put in park or 1st gear with my 2004 TJ auto tranny. The shifter will move freely to Reverse to 2d gear, but will not go into Park or 1st gear -- feels like something is blocking it. Of course, ignition key is stuck in steering wheel. Any ideas on what the problem is?

I have 59K on the clock, so I'm thinking this will be covered by Powertrain warranty?

Most of these problems usually have to do with that brake pedal shift interlock gizmo. I have not had any problems w/my '04 auto---YET! Someone is sure to chime in as I've seen it mentioned before. I'm interested also, so I know what to do when it happens to me.

Something simalar happened to me awhile back. I took the cover (center console) that is over the shifter part way off and saw that the metal rod on the bottom of the shifter that locks it into each gear was bent, preventing it from going into park. I got a pair of pliars and straitend it out, now it works flawless again.

I think I've heard someone say there is a plastic pin in the shift handle that wears and will cause this. Pull the handle off. Replace it with a metal pin?

That exact thing happened to me...on Argentine Pass at 13,000ft after a 2 hr off road drive over large boulders. Had to decend in 2nd & 4Lo - it wanted to go 20mph, had to ride the brakes the whole way.

Anyway - a pin broke inside the shifter/transmission housing (according to the dealer). It was replaced under warranty.

I got the shifter fixed today. I removed the auto transmission shifter handle by pulling upward. Need some force to remove it, and there's no screws or anything.

Then I checked all components to see anything is broke but all looked good. When I push the metal rod at the bottom of shifter I could hear a click from the safety that prevents from being shifted when brake is not pressed.

If you can shift freely with this metal rod being pressed down (with a flat screwdriver), then the auto shift cable or safety lock are functioning properly. You now know it's the white plastic ball-stick is the one that's broken.

When I press down the white plastic, the rod in the circle wasn't pressing down enough.

When I pulled the white plastic rod, I noticed it was broke at the bottom and the broken piece was stuck in there. Dealer said I had to buy the whole assembly because the pastic road wasn't showing up as a part that could be ordered.

Well, so I used a wooden chopstick, one with larger head at one end, and cut it to the same length as the broken piece.

I wrapped two sided sticky tape to prevent rattling.

I replaced the handle back into the shifter rod, and it worked flawlessly. Shifts out of park with brake depressed; will not shift into/out of park without the brake being depressed.

It took sometime for me to figure this out and everything looked good, and the park/brake interlock cable seemed to be OK. So, I decided to check the shift level handle and its button. That's when I found the broken plastic rod.

I didn't have to remove the console... just remove the shift bazel light/socket piece.

Yes, I left the broken piece in there. The broken piece is stuck in the bottle of the verticle shifter rod. The small broken piece in the pic above is just for illustration.

auto shifter stuck in gear

.....Have the same problem...if you pull the handle off the shifter(need something pointy to pry the fingers apart underneath) then there is a plastic shaft that goes down the tube. It has plastic balls spaced apart about 1/2 inch to keep it centered in the tube as the tube has a bend. Yours is broke....more than likely at the bottom ball. Once you have the shift handle off you can depress the plastic shaft with your thumb and it will shift and you can get your key out till you replace the measly part. I see this is a older post but I'm addressing it as I was told by a service manager when I tried to order the part that so many break he is surprised there is not a recall...
