cant get c-clips off

hello everyone. my buddy has a 98 tj with the dana 35 and we can get the clips off his axles to install a lockright. last weekend we were in some mud and his spider gears got all messed up and now the clips wont come off. i was wondering if theres a trick to getting them off or if its from the gears being messed up. i had my 8.8 apart lastnight and the clips fell right off is that what these are supposed to do to? any help would be great. thanks guys

Are you pushing in on the axleshafts? There is some in-and-out slop designed in to the assembly that requires you push in on the axleshaft so you can extract the c-clips.

we got them out now thanks. we had the axles pushed in but from the gears getting messed up it put a small lip on the teeth. we used a punch, a hammer, and a screwdriver and got them out. hopefully putting it back it will go smooth its getting a cold outside now. thanks again for the help
