Can't fill my fuel tank

I had my fuel pump replaced by a machanic. They had to drop the gas tank to replace the pump. Since the replacement I can only pump a little over 1/2 tank before before the gas pump shuts off. I can continue to pump but it only a little at a time until I fill the tank 10 minutes later. What up with that? Did the mechanic mess something up. I have my doubts about the mechanic as he diagonosed that I needed a full pump when all I needed was a crackcase sensor.
Thanks for any help.

I just replaced my entire fuel pump assembly and have the same symptoms.

I know the sender in the fuel tank is not reading the level correctly because I measured the amount of gas poured into the tank when completly empty. I used a Carter OEM replacement and as others will tesify, most fuel gauges do not give an accurate reading.

The problem with complete filling may be due to the breather tube or the anit-syphon valve. The air has to be replaced by fuel and rapid filling causes the fuel to slosh back up the fill hose. This cuts off the fuel flow from the pump unless you fill really slow.

Unless I plan on a trip to Hole in the Rock, UT, spending the time to completly fill the tank is usually not necessary.

Mine does that to me occassionaly. If I pull the gas nozzle out a half inch or so, it lets me fill the rest of the way up.

Probably breather problems, but mabye too harsh of an angle on the hose from the filler neck to the tank?

I know this sounds stupid.. but did you try another gas station? I've had this problem on a couple cars that never had any work on them. Sometimes its just he way the pump goes into the filler hole... Thats my 2 cents
