Can someone tell me what this hose is?

I am not the most mechanically inclined but I try to do what work I can on my Jeep. The hose runs from the cab in the firewall up to the front of the engine, the water pump I think? The radiator hose runs to the same part (water pump?) I looked under the hood and this hose was leaking around the part it conects to. The part is discolored too because of the leaking. The temp on my Jeep starts to rise any time I sit still for a while idling. I figure it was coolant coming out of the hose in question but I wanted to check. I hope replacing the hose and flushing and refilling the radiator will take care of the problem. Can someone tell what that hose is for or called? Am I on the right track for fixing it? I hate paying for anything I can do myself.

Looks like you have a YJ, not sure if it would be the same as a TJ. You'll probably get more help in that forum

Sounds like you need a new radiator hose. I would change the theromstat also.
If the water pump is leaking - It should be coming out of the weep hole - which is usually located on the bottom of the w.p.

Thanks, the leaking is coming out at the connection of the hose and water pump? What is the hose that runs to the cab? I know one runs to the radiator but what is this hose for?

That hose runs to your heater core inside the cab of the Jeep.

Sounds like you should check all your hoses for cracks, weepage, etc and replace as necessary.

Also, if the temp gauge is climbing while sitting still, I think your thermostat could use a changing.

Thanks for the help guys. Are the thermostats hard to put in? I guess I'll do a search as soon I get a chance.

It's not too hard at all.
Depending on your engine and accessories, getting to it would be the most difficult part of the task. I changed mine at the same time as my water pump, so everything was off already and very easy to get to.
Don't remember if you even need to remove anything to get to it actually.

I'd advise against using the paper style gaskets too. I've never had good luck with them. Some swear by them though. Mine leaked (well, more like seeped) for 3 months, then finally stopped.
RTF works best for me.

If you cooling system isn't maintaining pressure due to the leak/seepage at the hose connection, that by itself can cause the temp to go up or the coolant to boil.
If the hoses are old/original it is surely worth changing them out, and use the screw hose clamps, not the spring type.
