can the front driveshaft squeek constantly if im not even in 4wd??

so today i was supposed to take my front DS out because i cant take the squeeking anymore, the squeeking comes only when i accelerate,,, when i take my foot of the gas or put it in neutral its gone
so my buddy comes over to take a peak before i start , we take it for a spin and he says it has nothing to do w/ the front DS because im not in 4wd and that it cant possibly be squueking if its not turning ( which made sense )

another thing he noticed which i never did for some reason was that the squuek seems to come from the drivers side behind the dash,, from there he went to say that the problem was my speedometer cable ( maybe rusted causing squeek)

so now im still left with a squeek ,, HELP

Front drive shaft is always spinning without being in 4-wheel drive.. I would take out your front drive shaft and take it for a spin if no squeaks the shaft if the problem.

The TJ's front axle & drive shaft turn all the time even when not in 4H or 4L. The speedometer is electric with no cable.

There is some good info in this thread, but the following was left out:

Stop taking auto advice from your buddy.

8mm socket with 1/4" ratchet is all I used the last time. The bolts are not that tight. My $.02 is to undo it at the axle end first and just sit it on a jack stand. Then you can turn it by hand to get to the rest of the bolts at the transfer case. They come in from the rear, and can be accessed pretty easily from behind the skidplate.

Since its so tight at the transfer case, I would recommend just taking the DS off at the axle and tying it up well. Make sure to take your caps off the ujoint so as not to lose them. DO NOT engage 4WD. Go for a spin. Its just 4 bolts.

Good luck,

U - Joint...

I went through the same thing Last December. Squeeking at the front driveshaft area. As soon as i heard this I knew it was the front DS or more accurately u-joints. I sprayed the crap out of them with DW40 then compressed air. Test for play by turning the driveshaft in either direction. If it there is excessive play then the u-joints need to be replaced. They cost about $10 each. Even if there is no play they may not be properly lubed causing the squeek. There are no grease zerks on either of the u-joints (for extra strength). Depending on the wear, sometimes all they need is to be repacked with grease. After removal, if they look bad, just replace them. Good luck.

The squeak is the ball centering kit betweet the rear most 2 ujoint. Not that it can't be ujoints.

about a month ago , i took apart the front part of the DS that attaches to the front axle and tied it to the side and kept the back part bolted on,,
after that i took it for a drive and noticed the squeek was still there ,, if that was the problem shouldnt it have stopped

Yep, if it was the u-joint or cv-joint, then the noise is not comming from the front DS. You need to look elsewhere for the source of the noise.
