Came to the dark side

I just got an 06 Unlimited Rubicon, got rid of my 85 CJ7. My dumb question is... Is mine a TJ, or what. I keep hearing others refering to "there's" as an LJ. I thought the LJ was the new body style that is not out yet? I am I wrong? Thanks for the clarification.

Fact is, 'LJ' is a forum-derived named so people didn't have to type out Unlimited. It's a TJ. I suspect the 'LJ' moniker was cobbled up from a military version of the TJ called a TJL. And, it's 'L'onger by a whopping 15" inches (10" more between the axles, 5" more behind the axle)

Here's a link.... clicky-clicky. Scroll down about 3/4ths of the page. Yes, it's longer, but the rear axle is also pushed out clear to the corners -- looks like all 15" were put between the axles. No exactly the same thing.

So, in short -- you've got a Rubicon Unlimited, and it's a TJ. But for the sake of brevity on the forum it's usually called a 'LJ'. 'LJ' is not an official designation.

Hope that helps.

LWB TJ is more accurate.

But people will know what you are talking about if you use LJ for short.

How I explain it to my nephew.....

LJ.....Long Johnson....ie. longer version

TJ.....Teeny Johnson....ie. shorter version

I have a TJ....you have an LJ...Jeep that is....

BTW....your back will thank you for buying an LJ....compared to a CJ it is a Cadillac.

As most have said, technically it's a TJ. However, there is a metal tag underneath the radiator. On a short TJ, this tag has "TJ" embossed on it. On an Unlimited, it has "LJ" embossed in the same place.

Pick a different reason because that one is both lame and stupid to perpetuate.

Total Bunk.

The model designations come from Daimler-Chrysler. Every manufacturer has model designations for each vehicle, it's just that the world is largely unaware of them (like do you really care what model designation applies to a minivan?)
XJ,WJ, TJ, YJ, LJ etc are all actual model designations, in common usage everwhere (it's another Jeep thing) and this particular forum is not affecting how DC or the world designates the models.

In reality, the LJ is simply a stretched TJ, there are very few parts that differ between the two. But the Unlimited is indeed Officially designated the LJ.
