California Tops

I'm looking at a hardtop liner for a bit of insulation in the winter and was wondering if anyone had any dealings with California Tops Custom Jeep Tops? How are they to deal with?

If it were me buying a new top related product, I would avoid buying from Calif. Tops. They have a horrible reputation for customer service if you have a problem. The only safe way to buy any Calif. Top product is to buy from a dealer that probably has better customer support that will accept a return if there's a problem, unlike what would likely happen if you bought it directly from Calif. Tops.

There have been MANY MANY MANY threads complaining about Calif. Tops and its owner that seems to be a nut case... all just in my personal opinion of course.

The thread below is epic in length but it demonstrates what a head case the California Tops guy is.

Thanks for the warning, peeps! Customer service is a top priority for me. Just ask FORD, as the two local dealers in town found out. Reason #72 why I'm driving a JEEP!!!!!

Pigshanks,

I have had a couple Cali Tops. They are great and unique. If they don't come with defects. I have had no issues with Tim. However from many posts on other forums, I don't plan on dealing with him again.

I wouldn't even buy his products from a vendor.

You're still supporting him which he does not deserve.

I read a post by a Jeeper in Edmonton that Tim no longer has any vendors. He lost his shop and was making tops in his home and selling them by meeting customers at night in mall parking lots (so he can't be found) around Edmonton for cash.

Given the number of Jeepers he screwed even this to too good for him.

Do not buy from them, they will rip you off. That is almost certain. He tried to get me once but luckily I had paid with AMEX and they kicked his but and returned my money. He would not even give them a address so I could send the product back.

As stated STAY AWAY, Tim is crazy, there are threads here and JU and other jeep forums about how he would take orders, and if he DID send you the product it didnt fit, it was ripped or missing parts. Spend your moeny elseware

No return could mean no pay

If they don't allow returns, e.g., not satisfied or doesn't fit well, AM EXP's buyer's protection will deny payment and the card holder does not have to pay if you can't return it.

So, did you get to keep the bad top or had to send to AM EXP?

Yeah, I've been waiting for a while for anyone to start making a nice headliner for the hardtop like the one California Tops sells(used to sell?).

edit: It's now September 2011 and I'm still waiting for someone to make a decent headliner for the TJ.
