My 98 TJ blows outside temperature air inside the cabin even when A/C is on at speeds above 45-50. Anything lower than that it blows ice cold air. Anyone know where I should look first for problems?
Mine had a vacuum leak at a canister that was located under the battery tray. A rubber hose had a crack in it. You have to get on your back with a flashlight and look up under the tray to see it.
Spend $25 and get a refill kit with a gauge.Typically 97-99' Tj's get vacuum leaks that stop the A/C from blowing out of the vents at any load of the engine(higher speeds). If it doesn't switch to defrost vent only, recharge it.
Ok now I have a new problem the A/C compressor makes a ticking/whirling noise sounds like a bearing. It makes this noise whether the A/C is on or off. Am I looking at a new compressor or is there a cheaper way to rebuild it?
You are correct, you now have two problems, one is you have to fix your clutch or risk severely overheating your rig when the serpentine belt gets tossed off when the clutch locks up and the second is your vacuum leak causing the blend door to default to the heat side.
Bump. I also noted that there is little noise from compressor when AC is on but when I turn it off it makes a loud rattling noise. And noise increases when engine is under load.
I found something else out when the clutch or pulley(whatever it is) is not spinning I hear the grinding noise but when it is spinning there is a whining noise probably from the belt.
Have an experienced Tech check out that clutch. But, I think that it's a vacuum leak. When you get above 45, it's starving for air. How's your idle with the a/c on? Jeeps have cracky vac hoses all over. Start with a bright light and closely examine for cracks in any thin vac. hose. Look everywhere under the hood and underneath. Don't forget to check the hoses that lead down to the front diff. too.
I think for the compressor I will find one in a junkyard for 30 bucks instead of replacing the clutch and or bearing. To change the compressor out I obviously have to disconnect the pressure lines but first how do I drain the system?
ok found some new things today. No junkyards have compressors around me so I havent gotten one yet. But I hooked a bottle of freon with the psi gauge on it to see the low side pressure and it is around 80 psi which is not good. Also the bearing in the compressor is shot, the pulley was wobbling back and forth 1/2 an inch. And the air coming out isnt cold and smells HORRIBLE. So far im thinking to replace compressor, and check the orifice tube for blockage(If someone could tell me where that is it would be great)
I'm changing the compressor, drier and orifice tube later today. Before charging the system I have a vacuum and gauges to get the moisture out. Before I do this should I flush/clean the evaporator or condenser?
Any luck changing out the parts? Did it solve your problem? I have a 97 TJ and I am having the same problem. I have a slow leak, that I keep filling, but when I get over 45 mph no more cold air, it keeps blowing out the vents just hot.
Yes after the compressor, accumulator and liquid line were replaced the issue was solved. I have driven around 1k miles since and no leaks AC blows cold. I also used a $12 AC vacuum from harbor freight prior to refilling with r-134a
