Breaking in new gears

Hey guys,

I could just call my brother in law to ask him this question since he had told me a million times what I need to do but I bother him to much...LOL and he is working so I will post it.

I am getting regeared at the end of the month to 4.88's now I know alot of you have gotten this done. What is the quickest way to break the new gears in? I was told after the first 15 -20 miles I need to stop and let the gears cool down, but do I have to stop ever 15 - 20 miles after that as well and up to what (like up to 100miles) I believe I read and my bro in law told me that you shouldn't do anything hard with them until after 500miles ......Any suggestions or thoughts?

When I had mine regeard I was just told not run 65 miles per hour for 2 hours in other words just very your speed every 30 or 45 min. Then at 500 miles change your fluid. Thats all I was instructed to do. hope this helps

later

Read Randy's Ring and Pinion break in for new gears. I followed this method and haven't had a problem. Make sure you change out the fluids after 100-150 mi. That's pretty important. I was shocked at the amount of silver there was in the fluid after only about 150 kms. The rest is covered in the article above.

thanx for the help...I was told you don't have to change the gear oil until after the first 500miles...hmmm...on Randy's website it doesn't say anything about changing the gear oil...

Changing out the fluid after 100-150 mi is your choice but better safe than sorry in my opinion. Opening the diffs will give you a prime opportunity to see the wear pattern forming on the gear teeth. And if there are any problems developing due to improper installation you can correct them early on and save the gears from warping, becoming brittle (due to improper setup) etc. Also, like I mentioned before, there will be a lot of powder-fine metal floating around which doesn't do any good in the oil to help it dissipate heat - and those new gears will be susceptable to the intense heat generated as they break in. That's why the limits on speed, duration of runs at speed, no towing/hauling/offroading etc.

The shop that did my installation was very specific about the break in period. They are a Jeep-only shop and have done countless gear installations. I trust their recommendations, and it has worked well for me with my new gears.
