breaking in new gears

hey guys just got new gears today and got a couple of questions...

how long and what is the process of breaking in new ring and pinions?

would a tire balance and rotation cause my jeep to pull to the left?

last one how much wood could a woodchuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

i am a firm believer that a proper tire balance can fix the cursed deathwobble i checked everything and had a shop balance the tires twice. when i had my gears done i asked the off road shop if they could balance the tires better than the other shop and they did now no more death wobble. sweet. well thank you in advance for the help.

Probably best to ask the shop that did the gears.

General rules... very short trips and no heavy loads for the first 50 miles. Check by feel to make sure it's not getting to hot. Next 100 miles keep an feel on the temp, still no heavy loads. You can work up to 500 miles by taking it easy and making sure it doesn't get too hot, again by feel. At 500 miles change the oil and have at it. If it gets hot to the touch LET IT COOL before continuing. It only takes 20/30 minutes to cool enough to conitnue on.

I broke mine in by doing all the quickie around town errands. Didn't take long to get the first 150 miles on it that way. At ~250 miles I did Freeway Ridge but made sure the heat was kept down (no problems). Didn't take long to get to the 500 mile mark.

My personal belief, and sure to cause arguments with some folks, is that new gear break in is a myth. The gears are brand spanking new when you buy a new car and you don't have to stop and check those every few miles. Just drive, but like with a new car, I wouldn't do anything extreme like maybe towing for about 500 miles.

break in?

Make sure your diffs are correctly filled, drive the Jeep normaly.

Change fluid after 500 miles.

I broke my gears in my drving normal for about 2 weeks, then going wheeling for two days. Then changing the fluid. Gears are fine.

What I have always done is drive the Jeep on surface streets at 35 mph or less for about 10-15 minutes letting the diff get hot then I let it cool. I do this about 3-4 times before I go faster if possible, and change them at about 500 miles, you should be good to go. I wouldnt recommend doing any drap strip style starts or pull a trailer till I had 1k on them but that just me.
