Brake lamp/ turn signal gremlins
A while back I noticed my 2 side brake lights were not working, the center was fine, turn signals/running lights were fine, reverse was fine. So I know the bulbs are good. All fuses appear to be good. Replaced the brake lamp switch, nothing. Replaced the multifunction switch, now I have brake lights but no turn signals/hazards. Also, when hazard switch is engaged, I have no brake lights. I can get the turn signal and dash indicator to come on by jumping contacts on the MFS harness. Argh…any ideas?

I believe there is a ground behind the brake light housing. I was having intermittent brake/stop light issues and was directed to look at the ground there. My condition went away on its on, but I know, in general, that ground issues can have very odd symptoms.

If your brake lights aint workin. There is a switch behind your brake pedal. I had to replace mine. It was a cheap fix. It jsut turns and unlocks and you lock the new one in place.

I suppose there could be a weak ground causing trouble, but if I take a piece of wire and jump the contacts on the MFS with the fused(+), I can get either filament in the stop lamp to illuminate.
I'm still stumped as to why engaging the hazard switch prevents the brake lamp from working. Perhaps I could have a bad ground somewhere in this system? |

Replaced all fuses related to the lighting system, even though none appeared to be bad. No change. I can still get all lights (turn signals, brake lamps, head light, fog light) to light up by jumping wires on the MFS wiring harness. Turn signals won't work when I move the stick, and my hazards still a no go. Also brake lights are inop when hazard switch is engaged.
Since I can get all lights to come one manually, does that rule out a bad ground? Any ideas guys? |

Fixed!
Issue resolved. My dumb *** forgot to move the flasher relay from the old MFS to the new MFS. Which explains why all lights checked out for function via a wire jump, but turn signals and flashers would not respond to switch input - power is routed throught the flasher relay before continuing towards the physical lights.
You'd think the FSM would have idiot-proof directions for people like me, but no.... Last edited by VegasMatt; 09-05-2010 at 11:55 AM.. Reason: sp |
