Black keys & grey keys.

My 2004 TJ came with 2 black keys. They work fine, and from my findings, that means that it does not have the Sentry key security, i.e. the microchip in the key. In what years was the Sentry key standard, or was it an option?

it was an option. but with black keys, making a copy is as simple as going to the hardware store.

That's what I like about my TJ lol. My old saturn only had one key and I went to home depot and purchased 3 key blanks, then went to my job and used the key cutter to make myself 3 keys.

I'm looking forward to doing this on the TJ (making some key sets) but my insurance would be lower if I had the sentry keys. Thanks for the responses!

At my home depot, they cut the keys for you too. Same price...

My 01 TJ came with both Grey and Black and they both work fine for everything. What does that mean?

That means you probably have a Sentry Key and a regular key that both work for your TJ which means you don't have the special "smart" ignition system or the black key wouldn't work.

It means somebody at the dealer wasted an expensive *** key for a non-Sentry key equipped TJ

They're not really that expensive, but the markup on them is absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah I thought it was strange. When I start the Jeep, I see the key light, with the strike through it, turn on and after a couple seconds it turns off.

I've heard that color isn't always an identifier of a sentry key equipped heep.

i have seen some heeps with gray key with sentry key and some without sentry key having a gray key.

You do not have sentry. The grey key is either not a Jeep key or as stated above its a sentry key that someone paid alot for....for no reason.

The light flashes even if you dont have it.

No, color definitely is, and the aftermarket key makers adhere to the color coding. (Otherwise no one would want to buy their product, and how could they keep track of which keys are which.)
