big tires and lift on a 4 cylinder
Hi I would like to put some tires on my wrangler (some 32's or 33's) I drive a Tj 97 4 cylinder 4x4 . No modifications, nor upgrades; has all factory parts. Now by putting big tires, I would like to know if i have to make more upgrades, such as lifts, etc...without out affecting performance. And if it does how will it affect. Im not considering off-roading. I want it to look cool. I really want to upgrade my jeep. I will appreciate a response thanyou.

I can't support your reasoning so I vote keep it stock. There's more to it than tires and taller suspension.

2" body lift and re-gear to 4:56 near a 1000 dollars give or take, depending on how you do it

I agree with imped. Your mileage will be worse and theres a hundred more things that will need doing. I understand the wanting to look cool part but I wouldnt lift it and put some big tires on it to drive everyday. Im bone stock except for some 31s and thats how she stays until I have more money to fix it and most likely buy a littler beater car during/after college. If you want it to look cooler get some good looking tires and possibly paint your rims or buy some rims. Nothing crazy or people will not like it. I suggest 15 or 16 inches and dont make it 100% chrome. The smaller the rim the cheaper tires will be. I would go with mostly black with some small chrome to accent it. You would be surprised to see how much better it looks with simple changes. I would stay close to the stock size up to a 30. My 31s rub a lot when I hit bumps and for an everyday driver its rough on it. The goodyear duratracs are getting great reviews and I would reccomend them for a good looking tire that still has good road manners. Sorry for the long post but I figured id share my opinion.
And welcome to the forum. The guys on here are very knowledgeable and most will be very helpful and patient for those that dont know much.

I have a 2003 with the 2.4 ltr engine... and while it doesn't have quite the torque yours does, it's a four-banger, none-the-less. Point being, the darn thing became pretty gutless, when I put 32" tires on it. Prior to my 33's, I re-geared it accordingly.
Around town, with stock gears, it ran okay.... but I was always the last one through the intersection. And putting it in 5th gear, was a waste of time. Fine for me, but not to be tolerated by a teenager.
Many Jeep fans find that lift kits, and large tires, are just the beginning. Once their Wranglers are a foot in the air, they spend a small fortune, trying to return it's power and drive-ability. Think long and hard, before you start spending the money...

WHAT!?....if you just want big tires without functionality just go w/ a 3" body lift. Might as well throw some chrome tube bumpers on it as well...

I have a 99 with the 2.5 in it, I did the ZJ coil lift (got 3") and Installed a set of 33 bfg at. Not a speed demon but does ok. I'm getting around 17mpg and I use it as a dd. One big thing I had to do was forget that I have a 5th gear. I'm running the factory 4.11 or 4.10 that came with it.

33's on a 4 banger with 4.88 gears and i can keep up with everyone else in traffic and beat most 4.0 on the trail but it takes alot of time and money to be able to drive it comfortably as a daily driver with bigger tires. it can do it no problem you just have to re-gear the heck out of the it also adding the 4.0 throttle body made a huge difference

I can understand why you would want it to look cool, but there are many ways to accomplishwhat you want. The ONLY way to maintain drivability is to regear the axles. That will cost you about $1k. The quickest way to make a bad *** looking Jeep is to do a 4" lift and put on the 33"s, but that isn't all that friendly, and it will drive like crap.
If you want to just mall crawl, you wont get the answers that you need. If you are dead set on going for it, learn from the vast knowledge here on the forum. It will make it come out better.

I agree with dketten, my 4.0 tb made a huge diffrence. A week after I did the swap, I put on a 4.0 intake tube and that seemed to help even more. 4.88 is my next investment.
