Best Axle width

I got in a discussion today about the best width for a TJ. I thought it would be good to present the discussion to the masses....

What is everybody running and do you like it the way it is or do you wish you would have went a different way.....

Thanks for everybodys opinion....

I don't have an aftermarket axle assembly YET but I have been looking at axle assemblies and such and have been talking to many axle builders. The general concensus seems to be at ~63-64" WMS to WMS for a tj. One of the reasons is that if you are looking at an axle with a centersection larger than a D44 it makes it much easier to mount all of the brackets for a tj. And most have recommended a wheel with a backspacing around 4" with this width.

I think this is one of those auto vs. manual type things. All depends. You can run a wider axle with more backspacing and still look stock... or be a pureist and run a stock width around 60". Wider will of course giver you more lateral stability on off camber stuff and get your tires out of the normal jeep width ruts. Of course, wider will be harder to squeeze between trees and possibly hurt your turning radius some. Then there is the legal problems if you are running it on the street and the tires stick out too far.
