beef up the gearing

i have the 2.5L 97 SE running 33's right now witht he 4.10's im not doing anything serious i just drive to school and work and light offroading right now. whats everyones opinion on gear ratios. the jeep club im in says 4.88 but ive also heard that runnin 4.88 means they break easier while offroadin....?
