I would get at least one optima battery...Do you have a winch? Why do you need dual batteries?

well the winch will be forthcoming (by the end of the summer i hope...)
but i am so tired of leaving my stereo on for an hour (maybe a little more than that ) and having a dead battery... was thinking if i am going to add a battery may as well add one, and have twice the operating time you know? besides would be handy with the winch |

I agree, go with a yellow top first. But I also think getting a higher amp alternator would do you some good. If your alternator can't keep up with charging your battery, two batterys will just die after twice as long.
If you end up getting a second battery, regardless of where you put it I recommend the isolator/combiner from Hellroaring.com. I had one on my Bronco and is was fantastic. Much better & safer than the homebrew deals.... And don't mind Owen, he's just trying to catch back up to me in the pad...uh I mean post count ![]()

Aside from the expense and trouble to get two batteries working together in a Jeep, there's really no drawbacks to having them. On the other hand, are two batteries really needed if the alternator and single battery are in good condition and rated highly enough?
I've done some serious winching with my single Optima Yellow Top battery and it has held up well for 4 1/2 years now. So while I can see where two batteries would be better than one, I've yet to have my single battery give me any problems while winching. That said, I wouldn't turn down an offer of a dual-battery setup. ![]()

Duals are coolz
I ran two redtop optimas and an Orion Wired MBR 70 multiple battery regulator. Worked Great! I of course had a winch, stereo, heavy duty lights, etc.... This was a much better setup than most dual batteries because it regulates power between two batteries keeping both charged FULLY even when heavy duty use is in progress (no need for a heavy duty alternator). As for keeping the vehicle on Acc to listen to radio, it allowed you two batteries to drain. If you want two, have room, and a little extra cheese in the wallet two batteries are cool. The other guys are right about the yellow top though.
