axles w/ 4:10's, open diff???

So I have the oppurtunity to buy a set of jeep axle housings and all w/ 4:10's for really cheap. They are both open diff's though. My current 2k tj sport has 3:07's w/ open diffs as well. Should I buy these for the gears if they are both open diffs? What is the difference in the gears themselves that make them trackloc, or any other kind of limited slip diff? Should I wait for a limited slip set of gears to come along? Thanks, Nathan.

I hope your not just buying those for the gears so you can swap the gears into your axles. Might as well just replace your axles with those. The gear setups alone will costs you 500+. Not a good idea.

That being said, what axles do you have now? D30 and the D34 or D44?? What size tires are you planning on running?

I was going to buy them for the gears, but they come with everything so a swap would be easier of course. I am just wondering if it is worth it because they are both open d30/d35. I currently have stock open diff d30/d35 w/ 3:07's running 31's. I plan on going to 33's in the future. I loved my last one w/ 33's so I won't go bigger. These axles are just a really good price probably because they are open diffs.

Well if the price is real cheap then sure its worth it. The 4.10s gear will work great with 31s or 33s. Then down the road you can swap in a D44 if you need it and only have to regear one axle. Ideally you'd probably want 4.56s for 33s but I know alot of people than run 4.10s with 33s and it works great.

Whats even better is now you have trail spare axle shafts.

The gears are the same. What I don't know is if you have to replace the carrier when going limited slip. I thought some just replaced the spider gears. Check on that or maybe somebody will post the answer. If you do have to swap out the carrier for a limited slip then you have to get the gears setup again. However you don't need new gears as the ring gear bolts to the carrier.

That is what I am wondering. If I want to go limited slip or to a locker w/ the 4:10's am I wasting my money or am I getting halfway there for real cheap by buying set up open diff 4:10's.

I would do it in a heartbeat, swap in the whole axles. 33s are perfect with 4.10s and an MT IMHO, and a D35 should survive pretty well open on 33s as long as you aren't too throttle-heavy of a driver.

I wouldn't worry too much about the factory LS as it's a clutch pack which wears out, eventually leaving you with basically an open diff anyway. The LS does require a carrier swap even for the factory unit, so I'd just run the 4.10s open until you can upgrade the whole axle.

Proper gearing is more helpful on the trail (at least on the rocky trails here in New England) than an LS rear end IMHO.

Heck if you can buy them cheap enough and they are in good shape do it. You will benefit greatly from the gear change. Later if you want to upgrade your rear axle you can slap in a Super 35 kit or do an 8.8 that comes with 4.10's

The detroit TrueTrac is probably one of the best regarded limited slips out there because it uses helical gears instead of clutch packs. It comes in its own carrier, so you don't have to worry about that aspect of it. Lockers like the Detroit and ARB also come in carriers. So yeah, I think you have to get the gears re-setup so there's some labor cost involved, if I'm not mstaken.

If you are going to do a lunchbox locker, you won't have to replace the carrier.

If you go with a Detroit or ARB, you will get rid of the stock carrier all together since the ring gear attaches to the locker (it is it's own carrier).

It depends on what cheap is...I personally wouldn't spend more than $250 total on a D30/D35 combo, but like was stated earlier, you'll have some spare shafts!!!

You will enjoy the difference off-road.

$75 complete housing, axles, 4:10 gears, even comes w/ control arms, I just wonder if it is worth it now if I am going to yank them anyway when I move up to a locker, or look for a limited slip instead. But having a complete set of spare parts would be nice, I have been down that road before.
