Axle upgrade, time for a Dana 60?
I am looking to upgrade my rear axle.
This is my issue:
I am leaning toward going with a RockJock Dana 60. I'll probably just go with a Detroit locker again seeing as mine served me well in my current axles and will probably be keeping the 4.56 ratio.
My question is, I will mainly be running 35x12.50 tires on my Jeep (for the next year or so, I do plan to go bigger eventually). Will I really lose a significant amount of clearance running the RockJock Dana 60 in comparison to running a TJ Rubicon Dana 44 (current axle)?
I think that I will have a stronger rear end for sure going with the Dana 60. Then, when I go to upgrade past a 35 inch tire I don't have to worry about doing an axle swap.
I am just curious as to the clearance of a Dana 60.
Also the suspension will be a 4.5" Long Arm if you're wondering.
I am for sure wanting to do an axle swap, just looking for input on the Dana 60 being worthwhile.

they said to use your stock dana 30 ones, why would you dump the money then have to run dana 30 outer c's?

The RJ 60 axles have great ground clearance.
I'm fairly certain they have more clearance under the diff than a D44, but I cannot back that with proof or numbers.

The only reason to do it is to save money.
I agree though - its a pointless upgrade if you keep the TJ outer stuff.

Well, this thread has plenty of views but not many replies.
The final outcome is that I ordered the RJ Dana 60. Keeping the 4.56 gear ratio and a Detroit Locker will be in it as well. I also decided to order a disk brake conversion. Quite excited.

Is this the kind of stuff you can afford when you stop buying meat? If so, I am going to become a vegetarian very quickly

Is her birthday coming up? You can buy her the D60 for your jeep.

Lol that's a good argument to present.
I don't need money for steak, as I really don't eat it. I guess I could buy my boyfriend a steak though.
Anyway, the RJ Dana 60 was just a couple hundred dollars more than the a Dana 44 (If I were to buy one brand new) and stronger. It also gives a lot of clearance.
Honestly, the only Dana 44 I'd put in my TJ again would be a waggy 44. The TJ Rubicon 44's really aren't that great when it comes to strength. The axle tubes especially. Although, someone might argue with me for speaking against the all mighty Rubicon Dana 44 until the cows come home (which, I am not sure they're ever going to). Granted, they are better than a stock Dana 35 I suppose.
I also have to do some maintenance to my rear drum brakes, so I decided to just go ahead and do a disk brake conversion too. Might as well. It's going to be weird to not hear a chorus of squeaks as my drum brakes lock up on a rainy day.

ooooo your a female, I'm glad I didn't say something about what kinda man doesn't eat meat lol
I personally went for a built rear 44 because I got a really good deal on a brand new one and I'm not going bigger then 35's on this jeep.
The RJ D60's have the same ground clearance at the diff as a D44, there just heavier, but much stronger, the prices are getting better and better and I think it's the best way to go.
A lot of people are going with bolt in 8.8's and they seem happy with them.
Planning on a RJ 60 for the front to?

I may run another RJ 60 in the front. Or do some fab work on a Waggy 44, since we have a few of those laying around. We'll see in a couple of months.
I considered an 8.8 for about...5 seconds. They are very hard to find around here and I'd still have to lock it, regear, pay for whatever brake parts and it'd still be a C-clip axle. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad rear end and I am certainly not knocking those who choose to do that swap. I think it can be a very economical swap for some people as well.
I now have to wait 4-6 weeks since it's a custom order. Oh the suspense.
