i moved the smaller frame mount cooler to the front grill by building some brackets for it. i think this is exactly what it needed. ![]() ![]()

moving this cooler made a 30ºF difference around town. it topped out at 150ºF and the rear cooler fan never kicked on

I'm bringing this back from the dead. Any chance you have that nice wire diagram scanned into a pdf file somewhere?

Sure this is dumb question, but have you looked at the various diagrams Stu has over on his site? I used them and AllData for my swap.

I want to take a second and thank you, Tim, for this thread. I'm about to swap an AW4 into my '06 to replace the prematurely dead NSG370, and this kind of info is really, REALLY helpful to someone who's barely capable of the job

Picked up an AW4 out of a '98 XJ. Looked like crap on the outside, but I pulled the pan, and it looks pristine in there. Apparently it had been sitting on the shelf outside gathering dust since at least 2003, possibly several years before that. Picked it up for $200.
Stopped by pick-n-pull and pulled a flex plate, retainer ring, and upper and lower dust shields. Pulled another set, too, because they're so cheap compared to buying new, even aftermarket, but I thought better if it and left it laid neatly for the next guy who needs it. You're welcome, next guy. You don't even have to buy a cordless impact like I did to get it off. Enjoy. I paid it forward for all the write-up help. |

One thing I never complained about in my XJ was the AX4. I cannot believe jeep never had the foresight to put one stock in a TJ.

With the new purchase in mind I now have a problem with the crank position sensor. The one on the NSG370 is totally different from the one off the '93 AW4. However, they both have 3 wires. So now I'm wondering if I can just splice a new plug to the '93 AW4 CPS and it'll talk to my '06 PCM. And I'm also wondering whether I'll get it right when figuring out which wire is which

Hmm. Did you fab a bracket for it, or was it the same as the AW4? The problem is the sensor from the NSG370 doesn't mount at all the same.
I'm thinking about trying to fab up a sheet metal mount or something for the NSG370 sensor so that I know the signal will be the same. How *exact* does the spacing need to be for the sensor off the teeth of the flex plate? If it's eyeball close, is that good enough? Never had to worry about this before. |

mine was the samey same...
you are dealing with a newer jeep with electronics way different than my old 97. i have heard it is a more difficult swap. i haven't searched for a write-up for the newer years of tjs... i don't know what you will be up against... you can still manually control the aw-4 with a rail shifter. go to radesigns http://radesignsproducts.com/default.aspx and check them out. he is also on facebook and is said to be easy to contact for tech and questions... my write-up is on stu's site.

Right, I have actually got a rail shifter from Rory over at RADesigns, and I plan to use it on the trail, but I still plan to have the normal automatic action for daily use, and the CPS needs to be sorted put regardless.
I may just try to fab a bracket. Try to gauge the distance of the sensor from the flywheel as closely as possible and then duplicate that on the AW4. |

One thing to check is the timing "notches" in the flywheel and the AW4 flexplate are the same. I recall reading somewhere that Chrysler changed the pattern when they went to the NGEC computer from the JTEC.
