Anyone use undercoating in the footwells instead of bedliner

My feet areas are really starting to rust due to water leaks and what have you and i'm just wondering has anyone used undercoating. I work at a bodyshop and we use evercoat this stuff when applied right will dry and look identical to linex and it dries hard compared to most undercoating. And unlike most this stuff can actually be sanded off its not like a tary gooey type of crap. Heres the stuff i'm talking about.

Adheres to bare metal or previously painted surfaces. Creates a tough, flexible, textured surface. Non-asphaltic, can be used on rocker panels, splash pans, wheel wells, lower body panels and underbodies. Paintable.

I had the same idea as you because that stuff looks like it would be great but I'm not sure how long it would last. I used some 3M rubberized undercoating just like that to hide the silver washers on my t-case drop but it only stayed on for a couple of weeks. I did some light wheeling one day then got caught in a downpour on the way home and by the time I got home the undercoating was gone. I don't know if a mudhole took it off or if it was the rain. But hey, you can try it. If you have floor mats, than may help protect it from being rubbed off by shoes. It sure beats rust!

I will say this I,m not much a fan of undercoating ive never heard many good things of it. But i really think this would probally work nice for this purpose. But the thing i worry about is when applying undercoating over rust it usually just makes it worse. But when undercoating is applied right and taken care of it can usually outlast the vehicle. And the reason that the undercoating didnt stick to your washers is becuase there isnt much of a surface area for it to stick and the small area there was was to slick. If you would have sandblasted and put some primer on them you might have had a chance. What kind of 3m stuff did you use becuse i used some rubberized 3m undercoating on my moms jeep it was in a green can and i had that thing preped just the way it should have been and it still chipped.

The undercoating will get sticky when it gets hot so it probably wouldnt be a good idea. I wouldnt use it because that stuff doesnt really get hard. Just my opinion.

I sanded it a little but didn't do any more prep, it was just sorta a spur of the minute thing. I don't have it here but I can find out tomorrow exactly what I used

Don't use undercoating for the floors inside. When it's hot the coating will get sticky and rub off onto your shoes or rubber floor mats. Use herculiner or lineX etc, those actually dry to a rubberized hard surface that doesn't remelt into a goo in heat.

You could always spray a test patch and try it out on a hot day to see what it really does.

Im thinking about just spraying some on an extra piece of sheet metal letting it sit outside all day in the sun and subjecting it to a bunch of test.

Don't remember. I got it at wal-mart and it was in a red can. That is all I remember.

I'd first paint the rusty areas with a paint known as POR-15 which stands for Paint Over Rust. It actually combines with the rust to convert it to a non-rust compound that stops the rust. Good stuff. Just do a search for "POR-15" using Yahoo or Google to find it.

Belive me gerry i know what por-15 is. I just cant afford it i can get all the free undercoat i want thats the only reason i was considering it. Otherwise im just not gonna waist my time. I am strongly stressing though this stuff really doesnt seem anything like undercoating. I detail reposesed vehicles and there was a toyota 4 runner with a brushgaurd that looked like crap, so I sanded it all down and did some careful application of undercoating and the bank has gotten so many compliments becuse people think they got it linex-ed but it wasnt i used that undercoating on it then painted over it with trim paint. Like 5 or so years ago i sprayed this in my toolbox drawers and the one i didnt do any prep work on is starting to chip off but the others that have my chisels and sockets, wrenches and all that kinda stuff look like new. When i really think about it that brush gaurd was sitting in the sun all day and it didnt get all soft and goey. i had to use a chiesel to really gouge it. I guess ill check back to see if any have changed your minds. or have any diffrent opinions. What about just using appliance epoxy paint.

If you have had good experiences with it and seem happy with your results on the yota... do it. Afterall, you may have something a little different than what we have tried.
