Anyone running 35" with stock brakes, axels and engine?

I want to get the RE 4.5" lift and slap on 35s without upgrading the brakes, axels and engine. I have the Dana 44 rear axel, 35 front (unless I have them reversed) 99 TJ, with the straight 6, manual transmission. I am currently running 31s with a 2" BB lift and it has a little problem getting up to highway sped. Once it's there then there isn't a problem. I am told I would only need to add a slip yoke eliminator and shocks to the RE kit. I don't need any surprises. Nothing was mentioned about needing longer brake hoses. Please give me the real scoop. Thanks, JR

You will need a SYE and driveshaft, re-gear front and rear axles, and a new speedo gear. The kit comes with new front brake lines.

Good luck with your build.

BTW, you have a D30 front.

You should be fine. It will take more time/distance to stop then stock tires due to the additional weight and momentum of the taller tires. You will want to regear once you go to 35s. 35s are the upper limit for a 4" lift but the 2" BB will take care of the needed extra clearence.

"no problems" and "serious off roading" are both very subjective phrases. What may not be a problem to you may be a problem to someone else. What may be serious to you may be average to me. Any what may be serious to me is average to the next guy.

Make sense?

Serious offroading.....

No problems.....it drove out under its own power.

You most likely have a D44 and D30 front, unless you have a rubicon, where you will have a D44 both ends.

I run a stock setup with 35's, I have 3.73's and ofcourse a buttload of lift/clearance. The brakes actually weren't that bad. Although I have ABS, I managed to put it to use on friday and cause the tire to lock momentarily. I'm slip yokin it and regear and locking it soon. I have done some pretty Serious (a la STu) offroading.

As long as you really learn the limits of the jeep, you will be fine. Although I know its not the safest Train of thought, I just cant afford D80's, I mean D44's.

Call up DC4wd. They gave me a good deal on everything I needed for the lift. He gave me the re 4.5 SF RE monotube shocks, shock relocaters for the rear, AA SYE, and Tom woods HD CV DS as a package for a very good deal. Shipping was awesome!

But yeah, I drove around on 3.07's with stock breaks and a D30/35 combo, a lot worse than your D30/44 combo. If you down shift to slow down, it's not bad at all. I know eventually i'll upgrade my brakes, but I don't know what pads I have, they're bright blue, were on there when I got it, and I just flushed my brake system and I can lock up the 35's. I should actually video it so I can prove i'm one of the few that can with stock brakes and 35's. Any how. You'll want to re gear, don't just live with the stock gears and 35's. But it's fine for a temp thing.

You'll need what I said above with the kit, shock relocaters, shocks, SYE and CV driveshaft. And if you're planning on regearing, I wouldn't get a speedo gear right away, mine wasn't too far off. Although after I regeared it was 25 mph fast! =]

The two biggest issues you'll notice immediately after installing 35" tires will be the loss of power from the now inefficient gear ratio in your axles, and the loss of braking ability caused by the bigger diameter/heavier tires.

The braking issue is the biggest thing because if you got into an emergency situation where you really needed to stop fast, it ain't gonna happen once those 35" tires are installed. I know, I drove that way for two years before doing a major brake upgrade to the VANCO Big Brake kit. My brakes are now like they were when I bought the TJ new, I can lock 'em up at will now which makes driving a lot more enjoyable not having to worry as much about getting it stopped in a hurry.

For performance, you'll feel like you're starting off in second gear once the 35" tires are installed, and 5th gear will be usable only when driving downhill. You'll want to regear sooner than later, with 4.88 gearing being a great choice for that size tire.

Stu is indeed - that is a given considering his lack of body damage to his rig.

I have the 4" RC lift w/ 1" body, on 35's and 4.88 gears. lovin it! Didn't need sye kit, braks ok. The gears make the differance, I pull an enclosed trailer with 2 quads over trhe passes with no problem. All and I still get 15 mpg yeeehaaa. dont ask how.
