Anyone else paranoid about someone else driving their Jeep because of the ignition?

I don't know whether it is all TJs or just certain years that have this type of ignition but when I got my 2006 TJ I had a hell of a time getting the key out the first time because of the lock button behind it. It was the only vehicle I ever drove where you actually had to reach behind the key to release it.

The first time I let someone else drive happened to be my 21st bday and a coworker at the time was driving me home at the end of the night in my Jeep. I was too drunk to say anything but I knew what was going on. He had trouble getting the key out so he forced it. It's been a year and a half and to this day I can easily slide the key out while the engine is running because of him.

The only other person I've ever let drive was my mother and I made sure I showed her how it worked.

Am I the only one?

More to the point, If anyone else has experienced this...what, if anything, have you/can you do to fix it?

So now you can pull your key out to unlock your center console and glove compartment without shutting the engine off. and you can start the jeep to warm it up and still lock the doors so it isn't stolen.

Sounds to me like your friend did you a favor.

My buddy's YJ doesn't even need the key to start, just turn the part around where the key would be and she fires up.

Really, I always end up shutting my Jeep off and coasting down this hill in my neighborhood. Not to save gas, I just forget to take the radio out of the console

My YJ is the same way and I had an 82 Chev that was like that for the 6+ years I owned it. Never got worse and being able to take the keys out to do something was a great feature. In fact I'm glad my YJ is that way.

I don't see a need to be paranoid, just tell whoever is going to be driving, "Hey, there is a button behind the ignition you have to hold in to get the key out." It doesn't seem like it would be that big of a deal to me. I feel like there is a release similar to that on many other cars that are stick too though, I think most people would figure it out pretty quickly even if you didn't warn them about it before hand.

I've told em...they never remember when it comes time to pull it out.

Most cars you press the key itself in or there is a small button by your thumb when you grip the key....with the TJ you really gotta look/feel for it if you dont know where it is. Its behind the ignition.
