Angry Sparrows

ok so i need to do my front drive shaft, but my local Mech told me like 200-250, should i get it rebuilt or just buy a new one? i have about 3" of lift right now but plan to go to 3.5RE or 4.5RE in the future. so i'm just curious what you guys would do.

Do it yourself for about 120 tops. Its pretty easy, a few hours tops. You just need 3 u-joints, and the centering ball. If you want to be fancy you can pick up a u-joint press as well, makes pulling the caps easier, or you can just beat em out with a hammer. All told not worth taking into a shop

I did mine yesterday for around $60. Three Spicer 1310's, and a Rockford 404-0 CV rebuild kit. Bought it all at my local driveline shop.

I agree with the others , if you have some mechanical ability then overhaul / rebuild the front shaft yourself . Its not all that difficult . A small bottle jack type hydraulic press comes in real handy . I wouldn't recommend a BFH for in-stall of the new u-joint caps , you're more likely to displace or damage the needle bearings that way

I just did mine , 3 u-joints and the centering joint / ball for $ 75 at NAPA .

NAPA part numbers ~
U-joint part number : 210-0153
Centering joint / ball ( rockford brand ) : 260-0782

All greaseable of course , be sure to re- assemble the shaft in a manner that allows you to grease the joints without removing the shaft . Also be sure to align the slip joint to the rear yoke upon re-install . Marking the individual shaft parts before disassembly is helpful to be sure its back together exactly as it was originally built .

Take your time and have fun & save some $$$ while you're at it
