Am I an idiot?

Ok, so I am finally going to check my bump stops after I got my 33's a few months back. So I disco'ed the sway bar and put my jack under the driverside control arm bracket and started jacking. The tire wouldn't stuff I still had a good 7" between top and bottom bump stops and the wheel was nowhere near the fender. I am stupid or do I just need to get a really big jack or a really big mound to drive up on to check it? It was pretty far off the ground and had hardly any spring compression.

You need to load the opposite rear tire to get full compression. Put the right rear tire on a stack of old rims and tires or something like that, then lift the left front. I wouldn't use jackstands as they have a tendency to shift and slide out of place as the suspension moves.

stuffing

First....the disclaimer that advice you receive on the internet could be not only bad advice it could actually be dangerous.

imho.....you can't check clearance until you have two opposite wheels off the ground. Since you're checking this, I assume you have at least one locker. The easiest way I've found to check it is to drive across a shallow ditch at a 45 degree angle. You will soon find your left front stuffed, your right rear stuffed, and your RF and LR off the ground (don't get crazy here, you just need the wheels an inch or two off the ground).

PS> from this spot that first step out of the jeep is a long drop, be careful. Also, do this in dry conditions so the ditch walls don't cave in. The jeep will also rock back and forth with your pinky finger.

Another way may be to jack up opposite corners until the other two tires leave the ground but the ditch method is a lot more fun.

Thanks, I was planning on taking it out to a little spot tomorrow after work but was curious if there is another way.

If the boss leaves early I might hook it up on the fork lift.

But if you just want to see how good it does before you get a chance to get offroad, just disco and drive over to your local dept store or supermarket...something that has a loading dock you can roll a wheel up on to
