Great advice. Thanks.

For those who changed pulleys, is the pulley you ar erunning Larger or smaller than what came on the new Alt?

That will change the output. Maybe they are regulated somehow, but I would think at various RPM the output would be different.

A smaller pulley = higher RPM = higher output at low engine RPM

You can measure the stock pulley, and the replacement, then just do the math. You can figure out a percentage of over stock performance.

I believe most are just changing the pulley from 7 grooves to 6, not actually changing the diameter.

My pullys were both the same size. One was 6 groove, the other seven. Since the only problemwas a groove,I left it alone.

from what I have read in the past as long as the pulleys are about the same diameter you just use the six grooves that allow the belt to run true , no need to swap pulleys its just an extra groove and don hurt a thing

Same question. Anyone know for sure what 136a or 160a alternator is a bolt-in for a 2000 TJ? I think I saw a post saying something is unique about the 2000 alternator.

I installed a 136 amp alternator from a 2000 JGC on my 2000 Sport, no problem...

Thanks, just what I wanted to know. Did you stick with the original wire (alternator to battery)?

True it may never have any effect, but there is a reason to change pulleys to be the correct one.
Under high stress, and high RPM a belt actually fluctuates, and it can actually be seen on the tensioner pully. You can look at one when a motor is being reved high, and you will see the tensioner moving back and fourth to keep proper tension. There is a possibility that with an extra groove, and the belt not riding on the shoulder of the pulley, it could jump to the next groove. The belt jumping a groove will cause wear against the grooves in the belt, cause the belt to grab at the shoulder & jump off the pulley, jump off another pulley from misalignment, or possiply shredd the belt.

I have accidentally had a pulley misaligned by 1/8in or less. 500mi after I installed it, the belt shredded! I checked it every possible way to clear my name, but turns out the only thing I could find wrong is that I didn't have a pulley aligned correctly. That left me getting reamed by the boss, and a fire chief & 3 fire men that had a rescue truck fail on the way to a call!

Granted your not driving a fire truck, but you get the point!
