My alt was good and the core charge was $32.95. I just hung onto mine as a spare.

Well did you do a wiring upgrade or did it work straight away as is?

I'm not saying I am correct right now but I think the 02 Durango alt wouldn't work on an 97-99 Wrangler. I'm pretty sure the wiring is different and proably the mount being that the older wranglers alternators are down bottom of engine not up not. I have not tested this so correct me if I'm wrong.

I just put the 160Amp alternator from a 2002 Dodge Durango 5.9L V8 into my 1999 Jeep Wrangler. It was a direct bolt in and plug in. The install is pretty straight forward and took about an hour. I only had to ream out the one connector so it would fit on the back of the durango alternator. Here are some pics.

Here are the two alternators side by side. The new durango one is on the left if you can't tell.

Here is a pic of the pulleys side by side. The Durango has and extra groove.

The back of the alternators. Notice how there is plug and post on each alternator.

This is the wire connector that goes on the post of the alternator. I had to ream the connector so it would fit on the larger Durango post.

Stock alternator:

Here is the Durango alternator intalled in the Jeep. It has an extra groove in the pulley so I didn't use the farthest groove.

For anyone that wants to do an alternator swap, a 15mm socket will loosen the idler pulley and idler pulley adjustment as well as take off the two alternator bolts.

I can't answer what alternators will fit in what vehicles, but my advice is to look at the mounting location on the housing of the alternators and the electrical hook ups to see if they are interchangeable..

My alt was direct plug and play, minus the plastic terminal that I had to swap between the two.

What changed in the 03's? I got all excited about this. I went out and found a 139a from a durango, numbers matched but it did not fit. The number on the alt is 5602-7913 but the number on mine is 56041-864AB. Also, the mount points on the duranago one are basically at 12 and 6, the mounts on mine are like 12 and 7. The other number on mine is TN 121000-3821. Is this upgrade no-good for '03 and above? And more, there was a diode (rectifier) pack on the durango alt but on mine it seems to be built in. Mine looks like Snatchblock's up above (though I swear the mounts are a little off on mine, like I said) and the durango's looks like posts in other threads on this mod. I would like to upgrade but do not need the 160a (yet) and would just like to do the 136a. Although, if someone had the part number and the "TN" number I might still try to find a 160a in a junkyard.

Help!

Thanks!

idk about on TJ's but the XJ 4.0 should be about the same i would think.....we get the awesome 90 amp alt lol

i've heard that a 2.5L dakota 117 amp alt is a direct bolt in and the GC 136 amp alt will bolt in but needs a little grinding to fit, they probably have the same 5.2 and 5.9's as the durangos but i'm not 100% on that

I could not find it in the stock TJ specs on the forum. What is my stock alt size, '03 sport?

Thanks. So if I had to, even a 117a would be an improvement.
