Davey.. You have a vac leak somewhere. You have the same issue I had. Found the split vacuum line and now no worries.

Ideas?
Wife's XJ currently has this problem, I'll be taking a look at it with the info from this thread ASAP.

I was coming from the beach last year and suddenly air started to come from the defroster only. Ac stopped working. I thought I needed to recharge my car which I did and it did not help. I took it to a shop and the guy could not find in an hour what is going on. He told me to bring it over some other times and he needs more time to find the problem. Read this thread and followed the lines and found cracked line next to the battery. Got aquarium airline and connected the lines using electric tape and boom. Everything worked so decided to go next day and get the right hose. Aquarium airline is not strong and collapses with vacumed air but works. Two weeks later decided to spend $1.90 on the right hose and two minutes work.. is working now. You guys rock.. saved alot of money so decided to join the forume.

Mine was actually leaking on the passenger side.
The vacuum line pictured runs into a T fitting on the passenger side cowl. One side of hte T goes into the cowl and other side goes down the passenger side by the battery tray and runs into the fender below the battery.

I'm having the same problem with my '04. Also, my selector switch will not stop at a few of the positions. Is that normal for a vacuum leak or do I have a bad switch too?

You mean it just spins freely past?

When mine was leaking it would still click into position. But it wouldn't change where the air is coming from.

It looks like that should connect to a vacuum reservoir on the fender. I need to look at mine but you may have to remove the battery to get to it.

EDIT:
Just read the rest of the paragraph from the FSM - Battery and battery tray must be removed to service the reservoir.

I looked everywhere on mine and cant find a leak. I have vacuum at the connection going into the firewall. I pulled the lines off the back of the switch and had vacuum on some but not others. It will go from defroster to vent/floor but not to vents only. I wonder if I have a bad switch.

It may need to be removed to service the reservoir but there is a nipple on inner fender below the battery tray. The nipple points towards the engine. That is where mine came off. the end of the hose was dry rotted and cracked about an inch up. I cut off there and stuck the rest of the hose back on the nipple.

...just tracked mine down too. It was the vacuum connector going into the vacuum reservoir under the battery tray. (2002 TJ Sport)

Ditto for me.

Found the boot on the vacuum line under the battery tray split....A bit of electrical tape until I get a new line and all is well.

Thanks guys
