Got the part now and am ready to put it in, but cannot get the broken piece out. I have put a screw in, and having tried pulling on it, but cannot get enough leverage to get it out. Am I missing something? Is there a catch to getting the parts out?

i used a screw and was able to yank it out with needle nose pliers; try a black 3" drywall -or- decking screw with sharp coarse threads so it grips,. cause you only have like 1 or 2 shots before its stripped!

thanks for the link to buy the part by the way, dealers keep telling me its discontinued and I haven't been able to find one at local scrap yards or anywhere online, and i wasn't really feeling like changing out the whole airbox.

I have tried the screw with needle nose, and have everything else I could think of but cannot get the broken piece out. I even tried taking the panel off underneath the steering wheel and prying it out that way, but with no success. I am afraid that when I tried to use some super glue to fix it before it might have bonded the piece in place. Any ideas on getting the super glue to turn loose?

I'm afraid your stuck. They do make some super glue remover but I've never used it, don't know what it would do to the plastic and don't know if it would soak into the effected area anyway?

I guess you could place a blunt punch in the whole a whack it with a hammer hoping to crack just the glue.

Thanks to JeepnSon and his pictures.

I replaced my battery this morning, and when I got back in I turned the a/c on. Only out of the defrost. Got home and searched. Remembered that line had come undone before. Walked out and fixed the problem. Total time was five minutes.

Thanks to JeepnSon and this forum.

I am not sure if I am hijacking this thread but my air flow problem is similar all of mine work except the defroster. When I switch to the defroster it blows out the heater vents. Would this be that part that is so tough to find that switches to acitvate the vacumn canisters?

yep, sounds like it to me. Either broke or slipped out of the flapper door.
Read the whole thread and if you need more info let me know I may be able to "talk" you through it.

The vacuum controls the canisters,,,the canisters control the flapper VIA linkage.

I'm having the exact same problem. I put a screw in there and pulled as hard as I can but the broken piece won't come out. Anybody have any other suggestions? this is driving me crazy!

I was just looking into why I have no Defrost and I notice that one of the L shaped control arms has fallen out. I put it back in but it does not seem to catch on any thing and just falls back out as soon as I move the switch to defrost. Is there a specific way that it needs to go back in?

ON closer inspectionit looks like that L shaped control arm has broken off of somethinginside the houseing that has the actual vents that move to make the change. Do I need to get a whole new part and how do you get the broken piece out?

You can try two methods, 1) screw in a screw and try to pull the broken part out or 2) if the part than has broken off still has the flat "keyed" spot you may be able to carefully glue one part to the other and still have it rotate. (tricky)

Defrost only...

I had the exact same problem and didn't figure it out for over a year...yeah well, my antenna isn't pickin' up all the stations...know what I mean? Anyway, while at my favorite shop for another issue, they asked me; "How's your heater working?" I said; "Funny you should ask..." Now, it feels like my (OlllllllO) is new again!

Would have been a god-send the night we ran into a ditch in four feet of snow at the 3500 foot level in the Cascade with no winch and by oursleves...it was a long night during which another foot of snow fell...she's still pissed about it; $1,007 towing bill...

Now, we got a winch & a heater...lesson learned!

My flapper arm broke and I carefully glued the arm back to the flapper and used a thin long screw to pull the broken peices back together.

The repair lasted quite a while but rebroke a few months later. When I pulled the entire heater assembly out to replace the heater core last winter, I was able to repair it on the bench, the same way. This time I think it will last.

I've got a similar but more bizarre problem in that the controls work perfectly normal until I get up to speed on the highway and then the HVAC goes from vent to defrost all by itself. Usually around 60mph in 5th gear. I know it's manifold pressure dependent because I can let off the gas and coast for a bit and the HVAC switches automatically back to the vent mode selected. Once I give her gas again, it magically goes back to defrost again. It does the same thing with the A/C on... accelerate = vent to defrost, decel = defrost to vent.

Ideas?
