AIRBAG warning light

So a few days ago I noticed that the word "AIRBAG" was appearing in red on the dashboard instrument panel on my '99 TJ. I thought this might somehow be related to the airbag on/off switch down on the console, but I turned that to "OFF" with the key and the yellow off light lit up, then I turned it back "ON" and the yellow off light turned off, but the red warning light is still showing on the dashboard.

Would this be throwing an error code so I can check to see what the problem is? I assume an airbag isn't something I can work on myself?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Did the interior get wet recently? Check your horn, if the horn doesn't work I would bet that the clock spring not functioning correctly.

Nope, hadn't got wet. And the horn does still work.

Long ago when it was still under warranty, I had the commonly reported issue of the whole instrument panel going dead, but I had that fixed by the dealer so I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem with the connections.

I did find some old posts - one said try pushing the corners of the instrument panel (didn't fix it - like I said, shouldn't be a connection problem) and another said it might be the Airbag Control Module. I guess that warning light does throw error codes, so that's probably my need step to see what codes I'm getting.

Thanks.

Check also the poles/contacts behind the on-off switch. Some times one pole may disconnect due to vibrations, etc.

Mine comes on every once in awhile.
Give it a whack on top of the instrument cluster. That usually works for me.
