www.kbb.com will give you approximate trade in value, private party resale value and what you should expect to pay at a dealership.

It quotes roughly around 22k. They’re saying 20,500. Do you think I could get them to agree on 18,500. As I said, one dealer quoted me on 19,900 for a new X. Plus, they have 3.9 APR over 60 months.
This RME is used, and will depreciate for a second time after I buy it. Plus, no hard top… and is considered a year old in one month. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Walk in with a pre-approval letter from your bank or finance company for $18,500, lay it on the table and tell them to take it or leave it. If possible, as someone else said, wait until near the end of the month....I'd bet you'll drive it home.

After selling Jeeps for 10 years and used for another 2 I would tell you to stop and smell the roses. By that I mean take a look at all the Jeep dealers in your area. Who has the best reputation? Who is closest to your home for service? Who is th e biggest dealer by volume? The bigger dealers will be able to get you wat you want faster than a smaller dealer.
The dealership I worked for was the biggest in Kansas, and it would show in taking care of customers. We would sell about 120 Dodge Chrysler and Jeeps a month. Our Jeep store was incorporated with the Dodge and Chrysler lines. When you deal on large volume the thing that the manager will look at is the number of units sold. And in the last few days of the month alot of times we were trying to hit a certain number of units for a bonus. I have done some deals that were crazy to do as in losing money for the store, but if that helped us hit a bonus it would work out in the end. Those were the deals that the customer would come out great.
I would say if you have the time to wait, try this. Call the dealer that you have decided on buying from, preferably the largest in the area. If you have already talked to a sales person, call them and tell them you want to order one so you get it the way you want it equiped exactly. Tell them you will order it from them if they will split the hold back with you. On a 20k vehicle its about 3-4%. We would usually work that deal 2 ways
1 Will the customer take a vehicle in stock for the same deal? The dealer has every vehicle on the lot owned by the bank and they are paying interest on them. That is called floorplan. Sometimes if they can move one for a shorter deal off the lot they will. It may also help them hit a bonus this month. And you get what ever the rebates are right now.
2 The best part of ordering is its a done deal when it comes in, usually 6 weeks. And you get exactly what you want. Ours made it in a little over 4 weeks. You are alittle bit at the mercy of the rebates that you will get, you will get the rebate that is out there when it comes in. The dealer also doesn't have to pay interest on it eather.
Just work them for half the hold back. Tell them if they don't wan't to do it that someone else will, I guarantee. Oh if you havent talked to a sales person call and talk to the new Jeep sales manager. Usually when you go strait to them they will give up the deal to put a mark on the board. I don't know if this helps or not but that is a little bit of a dealers thinking. If you can't get anywhere with the dealers there I can put you in contact with the dealership I worked for and they will shoot you strait. I have sold a lot of vehicles to people that flew in for a better deal than what they could get at home. The web site is

Well... onto the next one. I got there, test drove the car to my uncle who is a mechanic who checked it out, and then drove back to the dealer. After one hour of going back and forth he would only budge $300 on the price. Felt like a waste of two hours. I can't help but wonder if it was because I'm a 24 year old woman. And I don't like to whine about that ever, believe me, but it just seemed like he was trying to seep me of all $ possible regardless of whether or not I knew how much they paid, because he could. I mentioned how I was doing this entirely on my own, so I know what I can afford, I was prepared, I had a pre approved loan for $11k in one hand, a cashiers check for $5k in the other and a trade-in with low mileage in perfect condition. The best he could do was go down $300!!
Apparently, it wasn't “that much money” I was asking them to go down to, so why not just get it. I said, if it's not that much then you can go back to your manager and have him give it to me for that price then right? He tried to tell me I won't find another anywhere (little does he know the same one is at another local dealer with 4500 miles on it). This RME is special and had the color scheme I like...yada yada yada. He knew I was doing this without my fathers help because he doesn't like Wranglers, so he kept reiterating that "you got this far alone and you've obviously done your homework - just do it"... what an ***. He finishes with "call me or email me, you know my number, and let me know what you want to do." I think he thought I was bluffing by walking but I most certainly was not. We’ve spoken via email and phone so I think that he assumes I will be back.
I've already made an appointment and I'm on to the next one. I still have the pre approved loan check and the cashiers check. I may just go with a new ’05…after incentives I’ll probably get more off anyway. His loss...

Most important thing is to make sure you get the D44.

I know you're all the way up in CT but it may pay you to give Outten County Chrysler in Hamburg PA a call. They are very jeep oriented and have some of the best deals around that I've seen. It'd be about a 4 hour ride for you but it might get you what you want at the price you want. The number there is 610-562-5174.

the most important thing she can do is go back to the salesman after she buys a wrangler from somewhere else and show him that she meant business. and there no point in spending an extra $2000 for a D44 if she isnt gonna go offroading, or go to bigger tires

jeepcurious...
I don't really need the D44. But... I'm tempted to get it just to drive by and park on his vehicle.

I'm pretty sure the RME comes with a 44 in it as part of the package anyway.

I bought my TJ when I lived in CT at the dealer in Bristol (Crowley?). I used autobytel and it came in around invoice. I would recommend them, 8 years ago they had good customer service.
As for trading a car in on which you still owe. It is not a big deal, the dealer will pay off your loan and assume the title.
When I have sold cars privately that I still owed on, I paid off the car loan with a credit card check, typically for a 0% for 6 months kinda thing, sold the car, then paid off the credit card. That way the title is clear for whoever buys the car from you. Makes your, and their, lives easier.

I live in Bristol and Crowley Jeep has a bunch of wranglers in, new and used. I'd check them out.

How did the numbers breakdown.
1 What was MSRP
2 How much rebate was there
3 What was the price of the Jeep after the rebate
4 how much were they giving on your trade
5 what was the trade difference
They don't care that you have a preapproved loan already. You have more leverage if you tell them you will give their finance a shot. They make more money if you finance with them. I had alot of deals that the manager took a shorter deal becouse he had a chance to make it up on the back end(finance dept).
