ac compressor question

I've noticed a clicking noise under the hood. Turns out out the a/c compressor kicks on spins a few times and kicks off. No certain timing to it. Is this normal ? The a/c is in the off position when it does it ?

Thanks

I believe the A/C system is designed to do this to circulate oil thru the system so the seals do not dry out and start leaking. Jerry

It's cycling on and off constantly? That's what it does when the coolant pressure is low. You can fix it yourself with a $20 can of R-134 w/ sealant which you can get at an auto parts place, or, if it's a fairly new vehicle, it may be covered under warranty. If you top it off, and it starts making that noise again soon after, you might want to take it to an A/C place to have it tested for leaks.
