99 tj ax5 getting hot

Anyone heard of a 5 speed manual getting hot on the highway? I took the shift boot off and it feels like a furnace coming from the trans.

Yep, mine does but that's because it's running on about 1/2 cup of oil.

Check your fluid.

The first thing I did was change the fluid. The old fluid looked like chocolate milk, kinda like engine oil mixed w/ coolant.

And I would change it again. 10/30 motor oil is now approved for the ax5 trannys.

I mean, that trans is going to be hot to the touch any way you slice it.

Is it making noise?
Difficult to shift?
Feel resistance while coasting?

None of the above, actually seems to be shifting smoother than normal. Hard to believe. No noise. 20 years being an engine and suspension tech and never noticed a manual getting this hot. Maybe it has always been this hot and I'm just now being picky.

imo, if it's not causing problems, it's nothing to worry about.
The trans will usually tell you that it's unhappy in other ways than heat buildup.
