98 Wrangler Manual:All the sudden extremely hard to shift and rear grinds
I've had no problems to give me any warning.
I have a 1998 Jeep Wranger 4 cylinder manual trans. This is what happens. I was going to work like normal. I went into reverse just fine. Driving was flawless. All the sudden while driving it has become extremely hard to shift. I have to force the sucker. Reverse only grinds however once you get it in its fine. I have tried to turn of the vehicle put it in reverse and start it. Works find then it's hard to shift. No other gear makes grinding noises, when shifting into, they just are extremely hard. No signs of any problems before this. Don't worry I haven't been driving it was just testing. Wanted opinions.

If it is a manual the clutch slave cylinder can cause those symptoms. Did you check teh clutch fluid level or look for leaks?

It is a manual transmission.
The fluid level seems to be decent. There doesn't seem to be any leaks. |

I still say clutch slave cylinder. Hopefully some one else will chime in.

i think it only grinds when the jeep is rolling forwards (when shifting into reverse). It does it to me.

BUMP!
I have a friend who is going to look at it today. Any more tips would be appreciated. My guesses right now are Slave Cylinder and water in the fluid...(The ex put water in the gas tank before this problem...so I'm wondering) |

It's grinding and stiff because the clutch isn't completely disengaging.
Some of the causes could be a low clutch fluid level, or air in the line, or on older cars, a bent throwout bearing fork. |

I think it is safe to asume that you have checked the transmission fluid for correct level, I remember on an older Landcruiser that after a few weeks of leaking a little every day that it became almost impossible to shift. You can check the slave cylinder, by having a friend step on the clutch, while you look at the slave cylinder to see if its moving the push rod. Make sure you have the park brake on, engine off. The water in the clutch fluid is certainally a possibility, especially if it is cold where you are, it could actually be turning to ice. It is also possible that you have lost the facings from your clutch disc, however when that happens you usually don't move. If I remember correctly your transmission does not have a syncro in reverse, and before this happened you had to wait a few seconds before you could shift into reverse, and the jeep had to be stopped. The fact that it only grinds now certainly indicates a clutch related problem. Good luck.

You have me sold on hood locks.
I had problems with a Ford Ranger 10 years ago. With the engine off, does it shift smoothly? Yes-look at the clutch. No-look at the transmission. At least that is what I have heard. Good luck.
