97 TJ won't fire but only sometimes

I just put in a new battery (2 weeks old) as well as a new starter. New fuel pump too.
When I turn the ignition to the on position everything lights up and beeps so the battery is obviously good. When I turn the ignition to start it, I get nothing. However it is only some of the time. The times that it does fire, it starts right up (no check engine light). It can go days and several attempts without firing and then the next time I try, it starts right up. I'm wondering if it's either electrical or the actual key/ignition has an issue. Any thoughts on what to check? anyone?

Check your ignition switch at column. Also what can happen is the ignition driver can break inside steering column. You will have to remove the cover and metal cover to access, you will need a tamper proof small torx bit set to even remove the cover to these parts.

When you turn the key & it doesn’t fire up are the volt & fuel gauges moving up?

If yes then possibly what JWebber says. Here is a link with more details on checking that.

ok- thanks JWebber.
Rubi4MyMrs- that's a good question, I'll have to check if the gauges move when I turn it on. Thanks for that link too- seems very similar to what is going on with mine.

Back to the "lab"- a friend of mine is a mechanic so I'm going to see if he can help me- I'll post the results. Thanks again to all 3 of you!

turns out it was the backup/neutral starter switch- it was broken and needed to be replaced- problem fixed.
