'97 TJ Mesh Grill Insert

I've searched numerous threads and haven't found an answer...

Is there a way to add a mesh grill insert considering the location of the hood latch?

If so... in terms a non-fabricating grandmother could understand, please... how?

Not sure what exactly you are looking for. If you aren't trying to cover the paint on the front grill there is lots of room in front of the radiator, you would just have to zip tie it on the top and let it hang down. I put canvas in front of the Rad this time of year to help the engine warm up faster.

Why would you want to do that? Does it serve a purpose or simply cosmetic?

The screening is precisely what I'd like to do... to eliminate any possibility of turkey heads or beaks from meeting my radiator.

I know I can do this inexpensively with stuff from Lowes and HD... I'm just not clear on how you do something similar to the chrome/red one and still account for the hood release.

I'm not familiar with the older hood relase but it is different than my 03. When you undo the rubber catches, the hood pops up to undo the safety latch. Yours you need to reach inside the opening, correct? You would need to remove/cut some of the grille mesh to get a finger in there. With black mesh it might not be that noticiable.

If you're concerned about critter heads, I would fabricate something myself out of some heavy-duty mesh. I don't have a lot of experience with the Mesh grill inserts, but they can't be too strong if they simply need to be zip ties in place (I prefer duct tape, myself ).

I'm also not familiar with the hood release on a TJ, but it wouldn't be too hard to simply cut out a small section so that it fits in.

The PO of mine had a short bra on it that covered the fenders to the hood latch and had screen in front of the grille.

the hood latches are different. your 97 is accessed from the grill slot (like my 97). the newer models are designed like Neil F. has stated (like my 06).

The first purpose is functionality to protect from critters... so even if I have to go with a cut out I will.

I'm thinking I can do something where the impacted slot blocking the catch can pop up and down based on need... it's something to play with.

I just didn't want to reinvent the wheel or ignore the obvious.
