There have been a few issues lately with trailer wiring harness problems and such, thought I'd post this as an FYI. I installed a 7 pin a while back and thought everything was working fine. Had a problem with my left blinker/brake on the trailer not working, but also had a bad bulb at the time-no problem. Well, went to replacing the bulb yesterday, and still had no left blinker/brake light. After tracing wires, the trailer was fine, problem was on the Jeep itself. I installed the factory MOPAR 7 pin wiring harness, and after sticking wires on it, couldn't get power to the left side of the vehicle.
After a call to the dealer, it was determined I had somehow received a defective harness, and luckily, he had one in stock. So, down I went and after comparing, the two were distinctly different. After checking part numbers, they were indeed NOT the same. The one he had was correct for my '05 Unlimited Rubicon, the original one he had sold me was for an '04 Unlimited. They are NOT the same, and will not work if you get them switched. Only difference in the part number is either an "A" at the end, or an "AB" of the MOPAR list book.
To his defense, we also found in another parts book that it was listed as "04+", or "04 and up" Unlimiteds-obviously a printing error in their list sheet. After removing the original one and installing the new, correct part, everything works great, as it should.
The differences are that the '04 plugs into the passenger side port, then had to stretch across the back of the hitch to the recepticle, then run up front from there. The wiring itself was nearly too short, and it took me a great deal of time trying to fit everything just right so there would be enough to reach all connections-though everything does plug in the same way.
The new, correct part fits in the left/driver side of the rig, has a lead for the 7 pin harness that runs down with ample wiring to reach anywhere you would want it to go, and a relay off that, which will tuck and hide out of the way easily. The remainder of the harness runs the length of the driver side, into the engine compartment, with the light blue wire (brake controller) running inside the cabin, the red wire (positive/hot wire when ignition is on-to feed battery on trailer) hooks to the left most terminal on the fuse compartment in front of the battery, and the white wire (ground) hooks to the screw next to the headlamp assembly on the front of the vehicle next to the radiator. There was easily an extra 2' of wire/harness left, so it tucked nicely in the huge opening under the dust flap for the left rear blinker, zip tied up, will stay in place and provide plenty of room for adjustment. With the right part, this install took no time at all, whereas the wrong one took far too long to hook up.
Anyway, just an FYI for those installing wiring harness's on their rigs-be darn sure you get the right year, and don't settle for an "04 and up"-they are NOT the same.
Best of Luck,
