4wd linkage

Well yesterday i put my new Sye kit in and at the beginning of the instructions it says put you jeep in to 4wL. Why does it say to do that and what happens if you dont. Cuz i have everytbing put back together and now my 4wd shifter wont shift, and ideas on what went wrong?
