4wd causing grinding noise from axle u-joint

Today I was at the river, and the drive down there is pretty washed out. So on my way out, i got caught in kind of a rut, so I put it in reverse, and I just spun the wheels. So i switched into 4 HI, and it got me out, thankfully. But I heard a loud grinding noise from my front drivers side axle, and something maybe from the front drive shaft, that i felt in the steering wheel, I know that my u joint is going bad on the front drivers side, but could it have caused that much noise and grinding?
